Now, review your answers. Most people have a combination of YES and NO responses. This is a way for you to determine “where you are” and will help you to see what the barriers and challenges to quitting may be for you. Part of working with a professional counselor who is skilled and has expertise in Smoking Cessation is for the counselor to HELP you to become ready. Most people have some reluctance and some hesitation with quitting. That is a very normal and natural part of the process!
Eventually, every smoker stops: Either the smoker stops the smoking OR the smoking stops the smoker.
My job is to help you to become ready, willing and able and develop the tools and plan to quit and stay quit. If you are currently smoking, your sense of identity may be very tied to smoking and our work together will help you to disentangle that identity as a smoker, to let go, to separate your smoking self from your authentic self (you were born smoke-free and that is your true self !!) Our work together is an investment in yourself, your self-care and your future. You are worth it !!
Our work together can include:
- Looking at the benefits you get from smoking and develop other ways to get those benefits. (Example: keeping your hands busy, stress management, etc.)
- Developing ways to make smoking feel “unfamiliar”. We will separate your identity as a smoker to the more authentic and natural identity as a smoke-free person. Instead of you battling with yourself, you and I can work together to battle cigarettes and nicotine and smoking.
- Relapse Prevention Plan. We will look at the ways that cigarettes may try to lure you or seduce you back into smoking. We can use a variety of tools, including homework assignments, and even consider Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy if that is something you wish to explore. Many of my client have found Hypnosis to be very very effective to help them to quit smoking !!
- It’s all up to you !! You can choose life, health and freedom as you stand up to cigarettes. You can do this and I will help you as you proceed through this journey to tobacco-freedom!!
